| Hot stuff!
Sat, 02 Aug 2008 03:51:00 -0500 Ah! — home, sweltering home. People had to make the best of summer’s heat before air conditioning. Southerners commonly slept on the porch, hoping to catch a stray breeze. They pretended their clattering electric fans did some good. |

A-state in the NY Times Mon, 04 Aug 2008 12:28:09 -0600![]() Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer star in "True Love." Sunday's New York Times Arts section was all about Arkansas-related folks and projects. Like Max mentioned on his blog yesterday, the section led with a big feature on Alan Ball's adaptation of Magnolia native Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire series for HBO. I suppose they're almost obligated to say this, but it was a bit surprising to hear network execs say that they expect this show to fill the dramatic void left in the wake of "Sopranos" and "The Wire." I mean, I'm all for Vampire sex dramas (though some of the Southern accents I heard briefly on a recent trailer might quickly put me off them) but there's no way.
Then, there was also a nice feature on LR native David Gordon Green, who directed "Pineapple Express," the HILARIOUS new stoner comedy that comes out on Wednesday. “People think ‘independent’ means no interference,” he said. “Not true. Unless you’re paying for everything yourself, you’re always subject to who’s writing the checks. And on this movie I had more creative freedom than I’ve had since I did ‘George Washington.’ ”

| Powell at the pool Mon, 04 Aug 2008 11:45:16 -0600 FESTIVAL-Valentine
Erstwhile Little Rocker Mike Powell, whose music criticism is just about unrivaled (one day, in the not too distant future, he's going to blow up), plays in a Brooklyn-based band called FESTIVAL. It's kind of pysch-folk, with two ladies harmonizing. They've just put out the above video, where Powell stars as an object of desire for the two harmonizing ladies. He's a dramatic chameleon. He plays the roles of St. Valentine, or possibly just simply a love god, a pool boy and a professor. Lynchian hilarity ensues. |
