| Blunders Make You Wonder Fri, 25 Jul 2008 23:27:10 -0500 The Lu Hardin bonus blunders show how little oversight Arkansas' state-run university boards get. |
Last Night: Apples in Stereo Mon, 28 Jul 2008 15:40:48 -0600![]() I hadn't listened to an Apples in Stereo album in probably ten years, but I went down to Revolution last night hungry for some sugary-sweet power pop goodness. I got that, though perhaps I didn't really understand the fullness of sugary-sweet power pop goodness.
Aside from being a little too busy, the band — made up of two guitars, two keyboards, bass and drums — did derivative pop well, particularly on a long "Magical Mystery Tour"-style psychedelic workout that I didn't recognize. Lots of Moog and feedback. The medium sized crowd (strong on a Sunday night, I thought) of mostly young folk seemed to loooove every minute, especially when the band played songs that everyone knows because they're on car commercials (see here, here and here). But ultimately, even more than on their albums, it didn't take long for the preciousness to wear thin. There's only so long you can listen to a eunuch-y front man sing about birds and clouds and energy and not want to throw-up. Ah, but I've got a dark heart. Anyone else catch the show? Also, my near throw-up aside, props to Chris King for taking another risk on the kind of indie band we rarely get in these parts. |
Monday: The Evelyns, Sonny Burgess and more Mon, 28 Jul 2008 15:00:13 -0600![]() The Evelyns. A new, or at least new-ish, incarnation of local power-pop champs the Evelyns headline Thick Syrup Mondays at Sticky Fingerz, with a new band, Frown Pow'r, unveiling weirdo lo-fi garage sounds, 10 p.m., $3 I think.
Sonny Burgess, the legendary Sun Studios rockabilly hero ("Red Headed Woman") from Newport, plays an unlikely gig at the Esther D. Nixon Library, 6 p.m., free. And, as usual, it's Monday night jazz jam at the Afterthought, 8 p.m., $5. |
'Caddyshack' prevails Mon, 28 Jul 2008 11:22:35 -0600![]() The people have spoken and spoken correctly. "Caddyshack" received the most votes in the people's choice finale of the free summer "Movies in the Park" series. This Wednesday at sundown.

Last Weekend: B.B. King and Willie Nelson Mon, 28 Jul 2008 10:14:08 -0600![]() B.B. King / Willie Nelson
July 25, Riverfest Amphitheater Mick Jagger and his fellow Rolling Stones were perhaps the first legendary musicians to keep touring long past the age when most of their ilk had retired – or worse. Proof the older set has taken a cue from those British whippersnappers came July 25 as 82-year-old B.B. King and 75-year-old Willie Nelson played for a large and adoring crowd at Riverfest Amphitheatre. The Stones, in a way, were also the first band that cried wolf. When I saw them at Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis in 1978 (for $15, I might add) it seemed sure to be my last chance. Right. And clearly, many B.B. and Willie fans braved the smothering summer heat to get what they’re betting was their final glimpse of these two Hall of Famers. (Or at least B.B. – Willie might be at it for another decade or so). |
