| Music videos aren't dead, they just moved to the web: Perspective! Thu, 03 Jul 2008 14:20:43 -0600 Lil Wayne- A Milli
I got nostalgic for MTV the other day. I grew up in a town where there were more Baptist churches than gas stations, so by popular demand, the local cable provider didn't supply MTV until I was well into college. So anytime I traveled anywhere with MTV, it was on. Adolescent memories of visiting my grandparents mostly involve me splayed on their kingsize watching "Ain't Nuthin' But a G Thang" and the GnR video where Axl swims with the dolphins. Later, when we got BET, which escaped the wrath of the moralists (they did show gospel on Sunday after all), I taped Rap City and watched it every day after high school. Pre-internet, videos and second hand copies of Rolling Stone were my only outlet to pop-culture writ large. So like a bunch of folks my age, I'm bummed by the lack of actual video programming on BET and MTV. (Also, that I don't have a cable package with MTV Jams or whatever it's called.) BUT like all y'all trollers know, the web is overflowing with videos. And increasingly, those that actually look good. So, today, I'm kicking off what I hope will be a regular series. The best, newest, weirdest, most noteworthy fare out there. The kick-off: New stuff that's all about messing with traditional perspective. Up top, Lil Wayne makes a video, for "A Milli," of him, apparently, on the way to a video shoot. He talks to the camera, walks toward the camera and preens for the camera. You are the camera, and somehow this is really fun to watch. |
| Thursday: Lil Boosie and Young Buck, Molten Lava, Big John Miller and more Thu, 03 Jul 2008 13:57:23 -0600 Lil Boosie "Zoom"
Two absolute beasts in Southern rap, Lil Boosie and Young Buck, come to the Statehouse Convention center tonight. No one typically comes out for big-name rap acts — I saw Pimp C a couple years back in the convention center with like 150 other folks — but Boosie, who Pimp co-signed five or six years ago and who, somehow, manages to sound 12 and really menacing at once, might be enough of a force here to pack em in. Young Buck, from Nashville, is one of the South's finest, but his cred might've been damaged in recent months after his relationship with G-Unit dissolved and 50 Cent leaked a taped phone call of Buck crying. Which, you know, IS NOT gangsta. Whatever, Cashville forever. 7 p.m., $22. Also: Blue-eyed soulman Big John Miller plays Cajun's, 9 p.m., $5. Hear up-and-coming hopefuls new to the local music scene during Fresh Blood Night at Vino's, 8 p.m., $6. At Revolution, Fayetteville favorites Molten Lava play 80s covers, 9:30 p.m., $5-$10. Established reggae pros One Stone jam Juanita's for an 18-and-up show, 9 p.m. The Ted Ludwig Jazz Trio holds down its steady gig at Afterthought, 8 p.m., $5. Live karaoke presented by the Movement is happening at Crush Wine Bar, 8 p.m., $5. |
Plug: Nathan Brown's 8-track obsession Thu, 03 Jul 2008 11:37:42 -0600![]() Here's an extra bump for Sam Eifling's feature in this week's paper about Nathan Brown, known to local showgoers as Browningham, the blue-eyed crooner/one-man band who sounds an awful lot like Michael McDonald. As interesting as all that is, this is a story about Brown's deep affinity and loyalty to the "humble," largely discarded 8-track. It's a good read.

Denny, Daytrotting Thu, 03 Jul 2008 11:00:56 -0600![]() More catch-up: Just came across the live Daytrotter session Chris Denny and the Old Soles recorded several months back.
They do "The Stars Above and My Heart in Your Hands," "Gypsy into a Carpenter" and two previously unreleased, but oft-performed live songs, "Vacation" and "Born in the Desert." All are available for download. Plus, really effusive and purple prose! Like... Denny makes sure to get across on Age Old Hunger that he’s always willing to stick his neck out for love, that he’s always willing to try it on for size. He’s never found love or the tenderness of it to be deplorable. Some things are just what they are maybe. Some things need to be tart and so teeth-breakingly, chokingly sweet to be what they really are and Denny couldn’t be a better interpreter. He makes love feel like a raging wildfire, the Arctic Ocean, a sucker punch and a vaccine. He makes it feel like no matter the setbacks, no matter what the potential drawbacks could possibly be, you should cannonball right into the deep end. He makes it feel like you took a nasty spill on a gravel road and you’re sitting along the ditch picking dusty rocks from your skin. He also makes it feel like this weird rebirth, the one that we’ve always longed for post-crisis. He will turn you cathartic if you allow it to happen.
Upcoming Denny and the Old Soles shows...Friday, July 4, Maxine's, Hot Springs Thursday, July 10, Pizza D Friday, July 11, some TBA spot in Fayetteville Saturday, July 19, the rooftop of Michelangelo's, Conway After that, a whirlwind tour of Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana. |
"The Power of Love" made weedy Thu, 03 Jul 2008 10:21:58 -0600![]() Like I told you pre-Riverfest, Huey Lewis is responsible for the theme song for what's sure to be the funniest comedy of the summer, LR native David Gordon Green's "Pineapple Express." You can stream the theme here on Myspace. The chorus goes, "We got trouble, we got to get out of here. I've got you, you've got me. We are as high as we can be. That's all right. How did we get into this mess?" There are rooftop horns. |

| RESTAURANTS: The walls tell stories, while the steaks sing at Doe’s
Fri, 04 Jul 2008 03:30:00 -0500 Its fling as a political celebrity in the 1990s didn’t spoil Doe’s Eat Place. This resolutely cluttered Little Rock steak joint with flooring worn near exhaustion continues to deliver year after year on its basic premise of flavorful beef cuts big enough to feed a family. |

| ON FILM: Wall-E rises above robotic consumerism
Fri, 04 Jul 2008 03:40:00 -0500 There is a temptation to ignite (or join) the inevitable Pixar backlash because it’s possible to see around the sides of the films into the cynical corporate world beyond. After all, these are the same guys who dealt with — and bested — Disney, the great harvester and processor of childhood dreams. And on one level, Wall-E is a toy commercial with incredible production values. |
