Wednesday To-Do: 'Love Guru' sneak-peek Wed, 18 Jun 2008 11:37:29 -0600![]() ‘THE LOVE GURU' In the Little Rock Film Festival's quest to stay involved with the community, organizers have announced that they plan to screen narrative features and documentaries year-round. To kick off the series, together with the Little Rock Film Commission and the Arkansas Film Commission, the LRFF presents a sneak-peek of the new Mike Myers comedy, “The Love Guru.” The Arkansas connection, as LRFF-goers know, is Graham Gordy, the screenwriter behind festival favorite “War Eagle, Arkansas.” Gordy, a Conway native, studied playwriting at New York University and met Myers through his then-wife, who'd happened on one of his screenplays. Myers had recently lost his longtime writing partner, the two had similar sensibilities and soon they started sketching out a character based on Myers' impression of Deepak Chopra. The result, co-written and associate-produced by Gordy, is “The Love Guru,” starring Myers as an American-born, India-raised self-help guru, who travels to Canada to assist a hockey player whose romantic troubles seem to be adversely affecting his game. Jessica Alba, Verne Troyer (Austin Powers' Mini-Me) and, promisingly, Justin Timberlake also star. Gordy will attend the Arkansas premiere and participate in a Q&A after the film. An after-party at Lilly's Dim Sum Then Some will follow. |

| The weekend in review: Chill and Mates Mon, 16 Jun 2008 11:47:32 -0600 So I spent most of the weekend torturing my wife and friends with my new Flip camera. I am, I'm told, soon to become "that guy." By which I'm sure they mean small camera auteur. When my hand gets steady enough and my editing chops sufficiently develop, I'm hoping to mash together speedy weekend clips. For now, I've just got what's above: Arkansas Bo (back, briefly, from Dallas) rapping to the stomp and clap of fraternity steppers. (I walked in on one of them practicing, earnestly, in front of the bathroom mirror. He wasn't fazed a bit that his routine had been interrupted. Eyes focused, hoo-ra-ing.) As you can see, it wasn't revelatory or anything, just another sign that Bo and Suga City are weird and funny and always trying to mix it up. Their show, on Friday at Revolution, was pretty messy. Goines seemed amped on something and Bo was drunk and forgetting lines, but it was still fun, and I'm still eagerly, eagerly awaiting their debut. Also, Piph and One Night Stand debuted a new guitarist (or sub, while Sixstring is overseas), who played a little jazzier back in the cut. Good stuff. As ever, 607 and Bobby were in effect. I've seen it dozens of times, but I'm always amazed at the number of fans down front who know all the lyrics. Saturday I caught Mates of State, again at the Rev, with a gang of people. Like possibly the most people I've seen there. All ages seemed to help. Aside from a lady on the second tier, just above the pit, who watched the show through birding binoculars, the bulk of the crowd was young folks who knew all the words. Or sha la las. The split was about half and half. Most of the actual words were about love and bright, pretty things, which was precious at times, but then they'd go an break off some ridiculously catchy multi-part harmony, none awesomer than the final song of the encore, a Headlights assisted massive version of "The Re-Arranger" with four-handed keyboard playing, accordion, cello and violin. The cult of Mates of State seems built largely on appreciating what a pretty and happy couple Kori and Jason make. See them smile, knowingly at each other. Hear them harmonize, cherubically. Speculate on their lives together (or don't, read their blog, Band on the Diaper Run). Best overheard quote of the night, "Dude, that's totally a baby bump." Anyone else catch a good show? |

| Bakin’ with bacon
Wed, 18 Jun 2008 03:32:00 -0500 Salty, smoky, sometimes sweet, the flavor of bacon is seductive for many, even irresistible for some. A friend once described her boyfriend’s insatiable appetite for bacon by saying he eats bacon the way most people eat popcorn. |
