| Benton County Musings Fri, 23 May 2008 18:11:07 -0500 Tim Summers won a Republican primary against Vickey Boozman. That would have surprised me a month ago. |
| Anyone notice... Sat, 24 May 2008 11:59:05 -0600 ...just below the fold in today's Dem-Gaz Arkansas section, the picture of Waylon's son, Shooter Jennings, rared back, hollering? He's wearing a Jimmy Buffet, "Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw" t-shirt. |
Riverfest: Teeming Sat, 24 May 2008 10:45:47 -0600![]() Paul Thorn. Photo by Brian Chilson. It's hard to remember what a full on confrontation with humanity Riverfest is when you haven't gone for a couple of years. I'd hoped to be up and moving toward the Budweiser Stage to see local instrumental experimentalists Mammoth Orange at noon, but I think I'm going to have to steel myself up in a lawn chair at home for a few more hours. Last night: I only caught a bit of him, but I think Paul Thorn's "when I was three, my daddy told me" thing is pure shtick. The walk from the Axciom/Miller Lite stage (AKA the amphitheatre) to the Triple-S Alarm Stage is a haul. But you get to go by the new spray garden, which was always in use, and the Jesse White Tumblers, who look superhero-ish flying through the air off a mini-trampoline. You also get to go through Market Row, where phone companies and makers of giant lawnmowers try to grab your attention. The state of Texas was even there, with an inflatable room, presumably where you get branded or otherwise Texas-ized, and a small stage with a picker and a grinner playing for crowds of threes. "Hi, we're an advertisement. We're going to play you some Texas music!" Even though it was 8 miles away from everything else, 607 still managed to pack a nice crowd in. 607 and Bobby's dad was up front hand-clapping and rapping along. Jessica Hendricks, of Silverton, who kicked off the night for the Triple-S stage, came up and did her best Madonna-style talk-rap. Linda Caillouet was even there, counting cuss words and crotch grabs (Can't wait for Monday!). After the show, dozens immediately flocked to the merch table, always a good sign. Then there was the three hour hike back to the Junction Bridge, which was crowded, but not stifling. If you don't care about laying eyes on big names, it might be the best place to take in a big act at the amphitheatre. I heard "Power of Love" and then walked across to catch the Moving Front in the Arkansas Tent. The space is small, with plenty of chairs and tables. Maybe the size of Vino's, but with way more potential room because it's open air. For anyone skeptical about seeing local acts, who play often around town, catching them with huge sound systems (even at the Arkansas Tent) is a whole nother thing. The Front kicked it out awesomely, while kids (with earplugs) battled it out with jedi swords. Today: Budweiser Stage Smoke Up Johnny, just off tour with Green Day, at 1:30 p.m. The Easys at 3 p.m. Kyoto Boom at 4:30 p.m. Then the long hike down to the Triple-S stage for Greg Spradlin After that, I may dig in to catch Miranda Lambert or who knows. |
Riverfest: Navigating Day 1 Fri, 23 May 2008 16:34:58 -0600![]() 607 with Bobby in the shadows. At least its not scorching hot. I felt a raindrop when I stepped out a minute ago, but so far, no downpour.
If the weather holds, I'm starting my night at the Triple-S Alarm Stage, way the hell west of Broadway, with the latest Arkansas Times Musicians Showcase champ, 607, who's performing with his brother Bobby (AKA Mr. Morbid). They'll be doing a family friendly set, thank you very much. Here's predicting a big turn-out. From there, I'll probably try to catch a whiff of Shooter Jennings on the Budweiser Stage in NLR as I make my way to the Arkansas Times sponsored Arkansas Music Tent to catch a bit of Nashville power-poppers the Nobility (lead singer Sean Williams is from Searcy) and then see if the Moving Front can kick out the jams with the same fire they brought last weekend. And maybe a little Huey Lewis. In case you forgot. |
Friday To-Do: Bang Camaro Fri, 23 May 2008 10:20:13 -0600![]() BANG CAMARO It's possibly the plum club gig of the year: downtown, either in Argenta or the River Market, post-Riverfest. Because, you know, after a day of sun and booze and music, who wants to go home? Revolution's Chris King could probably put an ol' crunchy guitar group in this spot and they'd kill, but he's gone and booked possibly the ultimate post-Riverfest act — Boston's Bang Camaro. The throwback metal band synthesizes all the best of '80s pop metal with a unique arrangement — three guitar players, a bassist, a drummer and a choir of anywhere from 10 to 20 “lead vocalists” who belt out choruses only (no verses!). Guitarist and co-founder Bryn Bennett insists that BC isn't a retro band. He likes “evolution.” On the band's MySpace page, he says, “We took the important parts of pop metal and distilled it. We came up with a purer type of music in the end. Let's be honest, no one cared what the lead singer of those bands had to say. They were either comparing their genitalia to some type of weapon that they were going to attack groupies with or they rhymed ‘fire' and ‘desire.' The fans never cared about that stuff. They wanted to scream along with the huge choruses or they wanted to air guitar to the solos. That's what we bring.” Yes. |
Friday To-Do: Damn Bullets Fri, 23 May 2008 10:16:29 -0600![]() DAMN BULLETS Then for those who don't mind a crowd, but might want to escape the teeming masses packed into the River Market, one of Arkansas's most popular acts headlines at White Water Tavern. Formed in 2004 in Conway, the Damn Bullets specialize in a kind of psychedelicized strain of that old, weird Americana, some indistinct spot on the map between bluegrass, old-time and hillbilly. The four members — Joe Sundell, DJ Bennett, Paul Morphis and Graeme Higgins — usually play fast, usually sing harmony and always play with sly smiles on their faces. The band's been in the studio of late, so look out for new material. Bob Oh Brown, a native of Jackson, Miss., plays a shuffling, whimsical brand of folk that should dovetail nicely with the Bullets. |

| Obama's metastatic gaffe Sun, 25 May 2008 23:00:00 EST WASHINGTON — When the House of Representatives takes up arms against $4 gas by voting 324-84 to sue OPEC, you know that election-year discourse has gone surreal. Another unmistakable sign is when a presidential candidate makes a gaffe, then, realizing it is too egregious to take back without suffering humiliation, decides to make it a centerpiece of his foreign policy. |

| Concessions mostly traveling food, not local fare
Fri, 23 May 2008 03:38:00 -0500 Food offerings at Riverfest veer more toward the fair circuit and not toward the offerings of local restaurants, the approach taken by noted festivals like the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and the Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle. |
| RESTAURANT: Grilled dishes a fine kettle of Flying Fish
Fri, 23 May 2008 03:38:00 -0500 A restaurant with no waiters, no napkins and walls populated by a choir of goofy rubber fish whose singing careers have expired must be doing a lot of other things right for business to be so brisk that the line of hungry customers sometimes stretches out to the sidewalk. |

| REVIEW: The Visitor
Fri, 23 May 2008 04:04:00 -0500 The Visitor is precisely the sort of film Hollywood has abandoned, a literate and low-key character study of an ordinary man in depressingly average straits. |
| Skullduggery
Fri, 23 May 2008 04:03:00 -0500 Really, it would have been fantastic if the new Indiana Jones movie had turned out gangbusters. Failing that, a good solid sequel would have been nice — proof that a handsomely graying collection of worldclass cinematic entertainers, behind and in front of a defiantly nondigital camera, were right to haul out the fedora and the bullwhip for one more adventure. |

| ON CHRISTIANITY
Mon, 26 May 2008 02:12:00 -0500 DEAR REV. GRAHAM: I know most of your readers aren’t in my shoes, but I’m the pastor of a small church, and I’ve gotten very discouraged because my congregation expects me to do everything (even clean up after the service). Maybe you can urge people to do more than just sit in church once a week. |

Mon, 26 May 2008 02:11:00 -0500 DEAR READERS: The question of what to do with old magazines once you have read them comes in often. With everyone thinking “green” these days and wanting to recycle or reuse items, here are some places where you can take the magazines: senior-citizen center youth-detention centers nursing or assisted-living homes prisons/jails veterans hospitals Be sure to remove any labels with your name and address on them. |
