| Riding an ice-cream truck on a summer day

| Chilling out by making ice pops at home
Tue, 12 Aug 2008 11:40:00 -0500 One of the benefits of making ice pops at home is you can control the ingredients — no artificial colors or flavors (unless that’s what you like), sugar in place of high-fructose corn syrup (if you choose) and real whipped cream or bits of chocolate, writes Kelly Brant in Wednesday’s Food section. |

| Chef in the driver’s seat
Tue, 12 Aug 2008 04:02:00 -0500 The Mustang is a hot car — the Porsche — the Batmobile — but they’re nothing compared to the sizzle of a 10-year-old Neon with black seats and trim. My car. |
| Media rumor Tue, 12 Aug 2008 21:08:10 -0600 And since I"m still up, checking e-mail at this late hour: I got a tip that the Democrat-Gazette may not be immune to what's currently ailing daily newspapers nationwide. Some indication of that had already been seen in new D-G publications to create new revenue streams, the latest being a slick magazine to be mailed free to rich folks (po' folks will have to buy it). Anyway, the story is that a memo circulated at the newspaper today about rising newsprint costs, the increased costs of gas for carriers and the short-term necessity to adjust through a temporary wage and hiring freeze to be re-evaluated Jan. 1. Sounds plausible, but I can't attest to the tip's accuracy at this moment. Anybody have a copy of the memo? |
| Glaze retiring from Supreme Court Tue, 12 Aug 2008 20:57:18 -0600
The judge, who's had health problems, is retiring more or less immediately. The Supreme Court is currently in summer recess. Glaze talked about his decision Monday with Gov. Beebe, who'll appoint an interim justice until 2010. The judge agreed to stay on until the court's fall term begins so the appointee can make arrangement to end his or her current work and prepare to take up court duties. Glaze won't be taking additional cases. Glaze told friends of his decision in a letter this week. He'll fall just shy of 30 years on the court. On the jump you'll find Glaze's letter. |
| Slimy worm Tue, 12 Aug 2008 19:10:21 -0600 That would be Joe Lieberman. Describing the choice between John McCain and Barack Obama.
The patriotism card, announced in front of an array of flags while Loserman was joined at the hip with the doddering old man who once said he decried that sort of thing. I used to think Dick Morris was the biggest scuzzbag in politics today. Dick, you've got company. |

| Arrest in child maltreatment case Tue, 12 Aug 2008 17:59:32 -0600 On Monday in Chicot County, State state Police made an arrest in one of the child maltreatment cases that we reported on previously. According to an affidavit, the child, 22-month-old Keyuandra Smith, died at Children's Hospital on May 29, a day after she was hospitalized with brain injuries. The foster parent in question, Eleisha Ann Sykes of Eudora, has been charged with first-degree battery a felony that carries a 10- to 40-year sentence. She is free on $20,000 bond. The Department of Human Services has declined to provide even the most basic information about the other maltreatment cases, citing a law that prevents disclosure in pending DHS investigations. The law does not prevent DHS from disclosing information known before the investigation began, such as the placement of a foster child and the child's death, including date and what was known at the time of the death. Nor would DHS spokeswoman Julie Munsell comment further on this specific case. In the meantime, Munsell said that as a general rule all children are pulled from a home when there is an allegation of maltreatment. |

| Parting shot Tue, 12 Aug 2008 14:41:50 -0600 If I read Under the Dome correctly, outgoing Sen. Jim Argue is sounding the alarm about the quality of the work the legislature is doing on establishing the cost of an adequate education. Pulling numbers out of the hat about school bus costs isn't a confidence builder, it's true. |
| Helena's crime wave Tue, 12 Aug 2008 13:34:13 -0600 The Helena-West Helena Council has adopted a "plan of action" to deal with a crime-ridden neighborhood. Looks to me like Mayor James Valley's martial law-style curfew has been softened a bit in response to ACLU complaints about its unconstitutionality. There will be saturation patrols and rigorous enforcement of existing ordinances. That's an improvement over a blanket crackdown over being outside while exhibiting no cause for arrest. |
| Hold that pilot Tue, 12 Aug 2008 12:24:31 -0600 From Kane Webb's interview last Sunday with Mike Huckabee:
From Michael Calderone today on Politico:

| Bush's corrupt Justice Dept. Tue, 12 Aug 2008 11:13:56 -0600 Yeah, they did wrong, but, no, they won't be prosecuted. Surprise. Plus, the a.g. will keep the political hacks on board who were employed when partisanship, not merit, ruled hirings at Justice. Quote o' the day: "Every violation of the law is not a crime." You think maybe some of these dishonest lawyers should lose their law licenses? |

| Uncle Gaylord passes Tue, 12 Aug 2008 09:36:20 -0600 "Uncle" Gaylord Willis, the Fayetteville restaurateur and raconteur, died Saturday and he's remembered on The Iconoclast, who also links the local obit. Of particular interest to food lovers is a link to an excerpt from his book on ice cream-making, his vocation before he entered the Fayetteville restaurant business. It's a thorough and useful treatise on home-made ice cream. Our community blogger in NWA, Street Jazz, also has some Gaylord stories. |
| Mike Huckabee forms think tank Tue, 12 Aug 2008 08:35:18 -0600 What do you think? I think, however much thinking is done, that it has some commercial possibilities for the Huck clan if the Gingrich, etc., models are any guide. Speaking of money, the NY Post picked up his "what-me-do-public-service-when-there's-money-to-be-made?" money quote mentioned here the other day. |
