| Petition day -- UPDATED Mon, 07 Jul 2008 12:49:00 -0600 Today's the deadline (at close of business) for ballot petitions. The lottery petitions are already in. The anti-gay group hoping to limit all adoptions had previously said it would submit an amount nominally sufficient (it turned out to be about 65,000, with about 62,000 needed), though the number admittedly included many unacceptable signatures. Sounds like the anti-immigrant group may not make it, even with bogus signatures to give a fig leaf for the signature-gathering extension allowed by law. Opponents of the anti-immigration effort say the expected failure of the drive amounts to a showing of the lack of enthusiasm in Arkansas for punitive measures against immigrants. I think it's more likely a showing of the disorganization, and at times, nuttiness, of the leaders of the anti-immigration effort. Whatever. It's a happy day if Arkansas won't have to fight that ugly fight this year. Speaking of ugly fights: Here's some advice for the good Christian canvassers in the anti-adoption effort. Careful when you sign a document swearing that you witnessed a voter's signature. Words have meaning. Somebody might be checking your work. UPDATED: It's official, Stephens Media reports. The immigration petition drive has been abandoned. Mexico may now annex Kansas City at its leisure. A drive to gather signatures on a proposal to give sheriffs four-year terms also failed. |
Things got buckwild at the Young Buck / Lil Boosie concert Mon, 07 Jul 2008 11:31:11 -0600![]() Smile-ier, pre-pepper spray times with Lil Boosie. Young Buck / Lil Boosie July 3, Statehouse Convention Center It’s not everyday that a national recording act comes to Little Rock, let alone two well-known rappers. Then again, it’s not everyday that police break up a near-riot show at the Statehouse Convention Center. Yep, Lil’ Boosie and Young Buck came to town. I went into the Governor’s Hall with high hopes for some quality, mainstream rap music. What I got was a marathon of local artists (607 outshined all of them with originality) who took large chunks of the crowd on stage to aide their performance of slurred, repetitive rap and a blazed Young Buck talking over his own songs. It wasn’t a night for the music itself, but rather one for observing the ignorance and impatience of local concertgoers and that mainstream rappers suck live. You could see the trouble coming. A chest-high metal fence lined about 75 feet around the stage to make room for an exclusive, $40 a person VIP area. With a $30 door tag, anything more is pushing already loyal patrons. Shouldn’t Southern rappers treat those in the South like their own kind and cut 'em a deal? Apparently not. |
R.I.P. Localist Thu, 03 Jul 2008 16:29:19 -0600![]() TJ Deeter, the founder, publisher and sometimes editor of Localistmagazine.com, is retiring the local pub after a five year run.
In his farewell blog post, he wrote... Don't feel bad for me and think I'm sad about this, it's just time and I have plenty of other stuff to do, and for you to support, like Hip Hop School and Cool Shoes. Also I have my own art projects and bands that I want to spend time with instead of always promoting other peoples work.
Localist was a unique project. Dozen of people, including me from 2005 to 2007, collaborated to publish it, first as a glossy magazine and later, as a webzine. No one got paid. In fact, a lot of people, TJ in particular, lost money. But everyone, all the people that worked in design, took pictures, wrote articles, copy-edited, sold ads and performed at benefit shows, believed in its mission, which, pretty simply, was to expose local culture that undeservedly existed in the margins. (That us-versus-them mentality was pretty sustaining, particularly, for me when I was working as a clerk at the Dem-Gaz and spending more than half of my time working on Localist.) It's hard to quantify the pub's success, but today, topics that Localist built its name on, like local hip-hop and kick-ball, are way in the mainstream. Local acts, of all stripes, get regular coverage in the daily and in the Times. Local fashion, which Localist gave early, prominent coverage to, has become big business. And TJ's name or some event that he's sponsoring gets mentioned in print just about every other week, and with his continued interest in promoting local shows and shepherding hip-hop school, that doesn't seem likely to change. |
