| Old Roads Lead Us Nowhere Thu, 26 Jun 2008 17:28:55 -0500 MCCOMB, Miss. - Quite a thing, the Internet. Quite a thing it has become, an absolute requirement for (especially) business travelers, a deal-breaker at check-in time if the clerk says the hotel's router has gone down, or if service is "a little slow" lately. And cause for immediate check out if there's any kind of malfunction once the laptop boots up. Not only in the reporter's trade has a fast, reliable (preferably wireless) in-room Internet connection attained first priority in selecting accomodations - so much so that running water and a clean bed are somewhere below Numbers 11 and 12, respectively. An innkeeper today who does not provide guests a high-speed cyber-link might as well dispense with running water and clean beds, and advertise it on the marquee. |

| Tomorrow's pollution news today Thu, 26 Jun 2008 13:59:15 -0600 Conservation groups will go before the state Pollution Control and Ecology Commission tomorrow to argue for a change in definition of air contaminants to recognize the harmful effects of carbon dioxide. The Arkansas polluters lobby will be there in hysterical opposition. Here's the statement they'll release to the media tomorrow. Clean air costs money is their essential howl. And here is the response from the conservation groups. Ernie Dumas tells you everything you need to know on this subject, including the background on the state commission's historically lukewarm stance on environmental protection. (What? You thought that was its mission and not protecting industry?) As Dumas notes: "You would think that would be a no-brainer since every scientist in the world who didn't get his degree from a Bible college acknowledges CO2 to be the most perilous of the greenhouse gases ..." |
| Old-fashioned fun Thu, 26 Jun 2008 11:43:09 -0600
The city dedicated the new children's play area -- it will be known as the Peabody Park for the financial support provided by the nearby hotel -- in Riverfront Park today. Grassy bowls were created that are just perfect for sliding downhill on a piece of cardboard.

| Thursday To-Do: Eclipse Glasses Thu, 26 Jun 2008 09:50:45 -0600 ECLIPSE GLASSES
8 p.m., Arkansas Flag and Banner. $5. What would you say if I told you that you could hear new, sure-to-be-compelling local music and support a good cause all in the same three hours? What would you expect that to cost? Fifty dollars? One hundred dollars? How ’bout $5, like it says an inch above? That’s right, for half a sawbuck you can support the Backyard Garden Project and the Arkansas Sustainability Network and catch Eclipse Glasses, the new local act that includes vets of dozens of great local bands — Kyle Carpenter, Lorenza Harrington, Colin Miles, Andrew Morgan and Zach Reeves. This is the band’s debut show. Morgan says they’ll be doing an amalgamation of “funk, soul, electro, Afrobeat, reggae, weirdo disco.” I’ve got high hopes. The Backyard Garden Project is an initiative that’s helping folks create backyard gardens, particularly those who are clients of local foodbanks. The Arkansas Sustainability Network, like its name suggests, is a non-profit aimed at fostering sustainable development. All ages welcome. |
