| Annals of corporate welfare Mon, 09 Jun 2008 20:22:55 -0600 The Jefferson County Quorum Court has voted to ask voters at a special election Aug. 12 to approve a 10-year half-cent sales tax to produce an estimated $4.5 million to spend on worker training and economic development grants (read handouts to potential businesses.) It wasn't bad enough when states began competing to see who could give away the most to lure businesses. Now the cities and counties are at it. In the end, of course, any business will accept this money and gratefully credit the far-thinking local leaders for providing the gratuity. But their decisions will still be guided in the main by available workforce, raw materials where needed, water (if it hasn't already been drained by a greedy industry), transportation, work ethic, state business climate, etc. An appointed board will dole out the money if voters approve -- I hope in sunshine. I understand Jefferson County's desperation. I think it's worth examining the conditions that contributed to its condition, however. No fair assessment would put a lack of corporate welfare money at the top of the list. |
| Hageeeeeeeee! Mon, 09 Jun 2008 18:47:28 -0600 If any Democrats are actually thinking about following through on their threats to "sit this one out" or vote for McBush in November they might enjoy Lee Child's latest novel in his Jack Reacher series. It's titled Nothing to Lose, appropriate indeed for those who are having trouble switching their support behind the party's nominee. The book should sober up those who haven't given a lot of thought to McCain's war fever or his (now-disavowed) support from the fat tub of guts from San Antonio. The book's not haute literature but it makes for a nice -- if sobering -- summertime read. |
I-40 revisited Fri, 06 Jun 2008 21:08:24 -0600![]() This one somehow slid under our radar: Bob Dylan (above, perhaps about to accept his Pulitzer Prize) is returning to Little Rock, this time at the Riverfest Amphitheater on August 26. According to his website, tickets go on sale June 21, with a pre-sale starting June 16. No Willie Nelson on this one apparently -- there are no openers listed. Dylan's latest, Modern Times, is well worth a listen if you haven't heard it. His live shows can be hit or miss -- when I saw him at a county fair a few years back he couldn't quite remember all the words -- but he mixes up his arrangements and keeps things interesting. Plus with such a huge back catalog to draw from you never know what he'll play next. Mark your calendars. |

Friday To-Do: San Antokyo CD release Fri, 06 Jun 2008 11:36:24 -0600![]() SAN ANTOKYO
10 p.m., White Water Tavern. $8. The world has (or had) the Van Halens, the Allmans and the Stinsons. Little Rock has the Kerbys. Those other famous rocker brothers have married TV stars and Cher, played at the Fillmore and trashed hotel rooms. The Kerbys, Josh and Kevin, played Vino's without their shirts one time. They also have rocker neck beards and menacing tattoos, respectively. With Kevin, known for his prowess as a singer/songwriter, kicking out chunky riffs on the ole electric guitar, Josh vamps and hollers out the lead vocals. They sound cowpunk-ish, but rawer and more well-rounded. Bryce, a refugee from the Contingencies, plays drums and the bassist is known almost exclusively as Slaughter House or sometimes just Slaughter. San Antokyo is celebrating the release of its debut album; the cover charge gets you a copy. Magic Hassle, an American Princes side project featuring David Slade, Matt Quin and Burt Taggart, opens the show along with barroom heroes Smoke Up Johnny, who after playing out prolifically and touring, briefly, with the Green Day alter ego, Foxboro Hot Tubs, probably won't be playing again for a long, long time. So make it count. |
