| The Rep's building program Tue, 03 Jun 2008 11:51:58 -0600
As I'd mentioned yesterday, the Arkansas Repertory Theatre announced today a $6 million capital campaign to renovate its home at 601 Main; provide off-site space for storage and set construction, and renovate its apartments for guest actors on Sixth Street. About $3.4 million has been committed. The Rep promises a new "state-of-the-art" main stage theater, expanded educational facilities, new public spaces, expanded restrooms and new heat and air. The work will mean a move of some of the 2008-09 season to alternative venues -- the UALR theater and Wildwood. The first three shows -- Les Miserables, If You Sing It, They Will Come, and It's a Wonderful Life -- will be staged at the Rep. Editorial note: Chip in. The Rep is one of the city's treasures.

| State revenues dipping Tue, 03 Jun 2008 10:21:59 -0600 The state's May revenue report shows a dip against the same month last year, and not so much because of the cut in the sales tax on food. In the sales tax category, money is coming in about as expected. But the forecast for corporate income has been overly optimistic. This is, the analysts note, a category that fluctuates quite a bit. Generally speaking, money is hitting the forecast and not much more. |
| Clinton's concession Tue, 03 Jun 2008 10:17:19 -0600 For the record, it's coming. Also here. Except, says the Clinton camp, NOT tonight. Just for fun: What if Clinton won South Dakota and Montana? Seems beyond unlikely. But the wildly unreliable ARG polling group yesterday showed her with a big margin in South Dakota and within reach in Montana. Typically, however, you can take ARG results and guess the opposite with reasonable confidence. |

| Welcome home, soldiers Tue, 03 Jun 2008 09:27:40 -0600 A sad story in today's Washington Post: Iraq vets suffering from post-traumatic stress are being housed alongside firing ranges. It's not exactly restful. Read into the story for an account of one soldier from Little Rock, Sgt. Jonathon Redding. |
| The heat: planetary and political Tue, 03 Jun 2008 09:04:48 -0600 Had Bush avoided the calamitous war, I think this kind of thing would still be going on. But the watershed of lies and ineptitude in the war -- finally -- washed away the protective coating from every other aspect of his corrupt administration. Flag-waving was no longer a king's cross against criticism and inspection of the epic disaster.

| Frontier justice on gas Mon, 02 Jun 2008 19:27:19 -0600 A Rudy man shot someone he says he saw stealing gasoline from a parked car Sunday night. I don't think the law gives you freedom to shoot gas siphoners, not even at $4 a gallon. But this is western Arkansas .... (Thought: If the sharpshooter could shoot to kill with impunity -- so far the man has survived his wounds, however -- perhaps we are not far from the return of necktie parties on the range.) Whatever else, police are already quite clear that the alleged gas thief will be charged. |
| Testing: public v. private schools Mon, 02 Jun 2008 17:52:19 -0600 A new "longitudinal study" says public schools do as well as private schools in improving students' math scores over a period of years. | Tax shortfall: Check's in the mail Mon, 02 Jun 2008 15:36:08 -0600 Recent news about unexpected dips in local sales tax collections might not be entirely a reflection of a sharp downturn in the economy. The state Department of Finance Administration says a mail distribution delay of some 250 sales tax reporting forms accounts for some $5.5 million in additional sales tax revenue that should be distributed to several cities and counties. John Theis, the assistant state revenue commissioner, told me further that, while the delayed payments cover localities all over Arkansas, "Once final distributions have been calculated this is going to address many of the shortfalls reported recently by cities and counties in Central Arkansas."

| Another reason to hate (or love) Wal-Mart Mon, 02 Jun 2008 14:12:35 -0600 Small-town newspapers tend to hate Wal-Mart because the stores killed off local merchants that bought advertising. Now, another reason to dislike the big retailer. Talk Business reports that Wal-Mart is getting into the business of free on-line classified advertising. Look out Craigslist. |
