| Memorial Day, LA-style Mon, 26 May 2008 14:52:47 -0600 I may leave it with you the rest of the day. Given some free time, I"m cooking today -- shrimp, crab and andouille gumbo. So far just the prep work is on Eat Arkansas. Maybe I'll have the finished product later. If I followed Lake Charles custom, I'd have a big bowl of potato salad, too, but I'm not that ambitious today. |

| Dogtown likes dollars, not homeless Mon, 26 May 2008 14:35:51 -0600 If you're homeless, NLR Mayor Pat Hays has no use for you. Thus, he has thrown up all kinds of procedural problems to a Christian ministry that would like to provide day services to street people in his fair city. But if you're driving an RV, the rules be damned. Commodore Hays wants YOU and will move heaven and earth to build a stopping place for you on the scenic Arkansas River, in view of his scrap navy. See Argenta News (with links to the new Dogtown Wire news website) for the latest. |

We can dream, can't we? Anyway, says Claude:

| To unite the Democrats Mon, 26 May 2008 06:59:59 -0600 Paul Krugman offers some ideas: (The "trumped-up scandal" is the uproar over her RFK reference.)
By the way, lest you doubt that the Obama campaign helped blow up this fake "gaffe" -- just as it got away with playing the race card by claiming the Clintons were playing it -- check a couple of sources routinely unfriendly to Clinton: the NY Times account and that from Talking Points Memo, which is thoroughly committed to Obama.

| Flex-time to cushion gas prices Mon, 26 May 2008 06:18:34 -0600 Stephens Media dips into the idea of putting state employees on four 10-hour workdays to cushion the cost of driving to work. The point is: Four-day work weeks are fine for some jobs in some agencies -- high prices or no high gas prices. Work shouldn't be upended solely on account of the gasoline bill. There are options, like moving closer to work, ride-sharing, etc. Quoting Kay Durnett, executive director of the State Employees Association:

| Electing judges Sun, 25 May 2008 12:21:03 -0600 Did you know that the U.S. is nearly alone in the world in electing most of its judges? The NY Times compares the U.S. with the world today in an article built anecdotally around a dishonest, race-baiting and successful campaign for Wisconsin Supreme Court by a Republican with little experience but plenty of political connections. Appointment systems are not without politics. But I prefer them to elections. |

| Tax dollars at work Sun, 25 May 2008 12:11:06 -0600 The Pine Bluff Commercial has a fine expose this morning. The city has poured $500,000 the last 10 years into an agency expected to build low-income housing. A grand total of six houses have been built. They came in over budget. Three of them were sold to people who didn't qualify for subsidized housing. The newspaper was unable to reach the couple that has been operating the program. Their own 7,200-square-foot home appears to be vacant at the moment. It would take some time to answer all the questions raised in the article, including more about financial anomalies and self-dealing by the program director -- purchase of property from his mother and rental and sale of a house, at a discount, to a daughter. |
