| CRITICAL MASS: Emptying out travel bag filled with good intentions
Tue, 06 May 2008 04:54:00 -0500 Good intentions are no excuse for indifferent results, but resources and attention spans are finite. My desk overflows and the calendar pages whip away as in an old black-andwhite newsreel: Time marches on. So I’ll do this from time to time — a column about all the things I’ve meant to write about and haven’t. |
| Split decision? Tue, 06 May 2008 18:36:34 -0600 So it would appear at this post. Everybody called North Carolina for Obama the moment the polls closed. If a third of the vote was black and Obama got 91 percent of it, as exit polls showed, Clinton would have needed 70 percent of the white votes to win. Wasn't going to happen, not nearly. He'll have a huge win there. With 20 percent of the vote counted in Indiana, Clinton is ahead by 14 points, but nobody wants to call it. It seems likely she'll win there. If so, the biggest loser of the night is Zogby polling, which gave Obama the lead in Indiana. He's been crazily wrong before on other occasions this year. On to June 3. This note. About half of Clinton voters told exit pollsters they wouldn't vote for Obama in the fall. But, as the commentators are emphasizing, many Republicans and independents are voting. So the unhappy Clinton voters may or may not be disaffected Democrats. They may be those avidly sought crossover voters. You tell me. |
| Injudicious Tue, 06 May 2008 16:07:43 -0600 The state Judicial Discipline and Disability Commission today admonished District Judge Elizabeth Wise of Perryville for violating the judicial conduct rules by effectively banishing someone from the county. Facts on the jump. |
| Hendrix to hit gridiron Tue, 06 May 2008 14:17:05 -0600 It's official. Hendrix College will play football again. No date set. The administration has been lusting after this as a student-body builder. Maybe the Hogs would consider re-establishing their old rivalry and special trains between Fayetteville and Conway. Arkansas State is too risky, I know. But the Warriors, for now at least, shouldn't pose a threat. Hendrix will play in Division III, where no athletic scholarships are offered. From the looks of it, I'd say Rhodes in Memphis, by dint of proximity, seems the likeliest arch-rival. ALSO: Arkansas Sports 360's account of the action includes comments from Hendrix trustee and former Hendrix football player Wm. R. Wilson Jr., a Perry County mule farmer who also works part-time at the federal building on Capitol Avenue. He played in the last Hendrix game, a squeaker over OBU in 1960, and makes the provocative suggestion that football players were smarter than the average student. |
| Styling Tue, 06 May 2008 13:51:02 -0600 AP, NY Times and Reuters appear to call the place devastated by a cyclone Myanmar. The newspaper that says Orval Faubus was a peacemaker calls it Burma. Also the Washington Post. Maybe Betsy can write a book straightening this all out. |

| Tax holiday mania UPDATE Tue, 06 May 2008 11:12:29 -0600 We've all heard that a few presidential candidates want to take a summer break from the 18.4 cent federal gas tax, a suggestion that hundreds -- hundreds! -- of economists have called irrational. Now some states are proposing to eliminate their state gas taxes for the summer months. Florida Governor Charlie Christ -- who, according to the story, considers it his job to "respond to the people and try to make them happy” -- has been one of the main backers for a state-level cut. UPDATE: Max here. I asked Matt DeCample last week about how Gov. Mike Beebe might feel about a state gas tax holiday. No response so far. Perhaps he thought I was joking. I was, kind of. UPDATE II: For the record, DeCample says that the governor does NOT favor a gas tax holiday in Arkansas. "It's the sole source of highway funding," he said. "You'd be getting into public safety issues if you squeezed that money. It's for maintenance and repair of highways." Proper answer, of course. |
| McCain didn't vote for Bush in 2000 Tue, 06 May 2008 10:17:53 -0600 So he told Arianna Huffington. And before you start asking whose word is more trustworthy, consider some of the McCain backflips and prevarications she's assembled. Will the mainstreamers join in? Cable talk should. |
| Steve Clark revisited Tue, 06 May 2008 09:53:19 -0600 The Iconoclast is working over the files of the Steve Clark fraud case for the benefit of Fayetteville voters who have Clark to consider as a mayoral candidate. | The good, the bad, the Blog Tue, 06 May 2008 08:42:57 -0600 The bad: Our apologies for the intermittent service interruptions of the last couple of days. We are aware and working on it. Some bugs in new website software seem the likely explanation. The good: Regular readers know that our little site frequently jumps out ahead of important news developments, though the Democrat-Gazette staff outnumbers us by something like 250 to 1. the daily newspaper is hampered, of course, by not following a 24-hour web news cycle. But notice Page One Democrat-Gazette news today, Tuesday, that Library Director Bobby Roberts will likely institute a hiring freeze and probably file his own lawsuit to resolve questions about whether a new library property tax can be collected this year. The Arkansas Blog reported that Saturday afternoon. Likewise, the D-G today, Tuesday, on 1B, dug into Democratic Party Chair Bill Gwatney's remonstrance of Democratic legislators for helping Republicans raise money. The Arkansas Blog first broke news of the crossover campaign help. Then, Saturday, Stephens Media columnist John Brummett broke news of the Gwatney letter, another bit of news (along with rising House Speaker Robbie Will's pained response), that the Arkansas Blog posted Saturday morning. Regular readers know all this. But, please, tell your friends. The more readers and commenters, the more tips come our way. Thanks for reading, even when it is frustrating because of software glitches. |
| ACORN picks Tue, 06 May 2008 08:30:59 -0600 The Pulaski County ACORN PAC has issued political endorsements. I was interested in some picks related to the neighborhoods where the grassroots group is known to be strong. ACORN didn't make a choice in the Democratic primary race for Senate District 33, where incumbent Sen. Irma Brown faces a challenge from former legislator Joyce Elliott. "ACORN has worked positively with both candidates and believes that either one would serve their constituents well." In the race for the open seat in House District 36, ACORN backed Charles King over Darrin Williams. "Both candidates were thoughtful and took good positions on the issues. The committee believes that Mr. King will be more accountable to his low- to moderate-income constituents." Other picks: Incumbent Judge Wendell Griffen for Court of Appeals; incumbent JP Wilandra Dean for District 5; incumbent JP Ann McCaleb for District (even though she's been serving the interests of despoilers of Lake Maumelle); Rita Bailey and Veletta Smith for district judge, Wrightsville division; for LR district court, criminal division, Alice Lightle, and, for LR environmental court, Mark Leverett. Leverett's work as a legal advisor to Circuit Judge Willard Proctor in the ongoing disaster that is Proctor's independent, unaccountable Cycle Breakers probation program makes him the most problematic candidate in any judicial race. Sound judgment -- the first among all qualities to consider in a judicial candidate -- has been woefully lacking at nearly every step of the mess. Also, an investigation of Proctor in the matter is reaching critical mass.

| Why Obama will win Tue, 06 May 2008 06:46:43 -0600 Brummett takes the flipside today. |
| Go, Rebels UPDATE Tue, 06 May 2008 06:38:38 -0600 A sharp reader mentioned this yesterday, but unhappy Razorback fans have demanded more prominent attention to a Mike Huckabee lip-flap in Mississippi while campaigning in a congressional race. So here:
PHOTO OP UPDATE: I've learned that, when the John McCain bus returned to Central Flying service after a Little Rock stop a little more than a week ago, it happened to arrive at the same time as Houston Nutt, on the Ole Miss plane. Nutt got a royal Still more on the Huck-Rebel lovefest, including the story of a gubernatorial lab pup named Toddy. A comment there led me also to the mikeyhuckabee blog. It is NOT an authorized site. |
| Silent is Golden Bear UPDATE Mon, 05 May 2008 17:19:08 -0600
Jack Nicklaus made a stop at Warren Stephens' Alotian golf course today as part of the annual Jackson T. Stephens charity tourney. Jim Harris at Arkansas Sports 360 is all over it with photos, video, etc. (Our invite must have gotten lost in the mail.) Lede: Nicklaus, warm and entertaining apparently, declined to offer an opinion on the Arkansas bad boy of golf, John Daly. What's to add, really? UPDATE: Here's what to add (we couldn't resist): Youtube video of a shirtless Daly getting interviewed on the course at Branson. |
