Dear Editor: Scare tactics... Thu, 1 May 2008 16:00:57 -0500 One of the scare-tactic falsehoods that Republicans will be pitching again is that Democrats will raise everybody’s taxes. Don’t take the bait. You can bet that Democrats will raise taxes on the extremely wealthy, but they won’t be raising taxes on the middle and lower classes. Think of what we’ve seen since the Dems have taken firm control here in Arkansas. The grocery tax got cut in half with the other half to be cautiously axed later. Beebe and the Dems secured some significant revenue for our roads with a very reasonable severance tax placed on the natural gas industry. Since the price of natural gas is determined by the futures market, this minor tax will have little or no impact on anyone’s heating bill.
Op-Ed / Jerry Jackson: Voters should be qualified Wed, 30 Apr 2008 11:59:28 -0500 As we go further into the cycle, it becomes apparent that this presidential election, like many preceding it, will be based upon the personalities of the candidates, and not the principles they stand for or the positions they take. The mainstream media adds to this personality circus by spending 95 percent of the time discussing how tired the candidate appears, how they react to criticism and can they survive the latest attack by their opponent. The closest you get to issues is vague promises of feed the poor, tax the rich, and save the planet.
Op-Ed / Richard Mays: The times they are a-changin’ Thu, 1 May 2008 16:02:31 -0500 On that fateful September 11 in 2001, if you were watching television when the terrorists drove the airplanes they had highjacked into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania, you knew that from that point on, the world would never be the same. Not only would we be changed emotionally and spiritually from watching the events that caused so much loss of life and property, but we knew that the world would be a more dangerous place, and that we would have more restrictions on our travel, our access to public buildings, and our individual liberties.
Op-Ed / Carol Balderree: High gas prices Thu, 1 May 2008 16:00:58 -0500 This week marked a life-changing shift in consciousness for me. For the first time ever, I spent over $50 to fill my 4-cylinder 5-speed Toyota with gasoline. I winced when the cost of a tank of gas went over $40, but continued to drive as usual. Now, with gas at an all-time record high of around $3.50 per gallon I, (and apparently many other Americans) am giving serious thoughts to changing my driving habits. For the first time in 17 years, Americans have actually reduced their consumption of gasoline, and that’s not a bad thing.

Community center: Back to the drawing board Fri, 25 Apr 2008 15:36:10 -0500 The old clich/ of “going back to the drawing board” is something that’s ringing true for the community center project in Heber Springs. Bids were opened in February for the $9 million budgeted center. They came in over $1 million more than expected. ETC Engineers has had to make changes to the original plans, but not sacrifice promises to the voters. “With the changes, we are not pulling amenities from the facility,” said Heber Springs Mayor Jackie McPherson. “Some items will have to be reduced in size and some non-essential items removed, but we are keeping the promised features.”
